It is not widely known that before the 'annexation of Tibet by the People's Republic of China, (called the "Peaceful Liberation of Tibet" by the Chinese government, and the "Chinese invasion of Tibet" by the Central Tibetan Administration' and the CIA) that Tibet was a slave-based society. The Dalai Lama was the largest slave owner in the country. It was outlawed following the 1951 annexation/invasion.
It is surprising because slave-based societies can only be maintained through coercion and brutality seems so obviously at odds with Compassion, so central in Buddhist teachings. The Law of Karma is also firmly entrenched in their worldview such that anyone born a slave would be seen as fulfilling that debt.
